Hill Housing Rehabilitation Project
This 1996 project provided much needed affordable housing to the Hill area as well as having an impact on an area where blighted housing is an absolute problem. Our project was unique in that we rehabilitated blocks of houses rather than just several houses in a block. Just to give you an example, the Princess Theatre on Davenport Avenue in New Haven had been vacant for some years and had been an eyesore due to the enormity of the structure. With our project we converted this building to affordable housing and rehabilitated houses adjacent to the building. This not only benefited the existing houses in the neighborhood but it also gave a big boost to the businesses on Davenport Avenue. It improved the overall status of the area by removing the eyesore and getting new residents to the area. This project was the first of its kind, in New Haven and is the cornerstone of rehabilitation in the Hill district. The Project was financed primarily with Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) as well as contributions from the two leading Hill Employers, Yale University and Yale New Haven Hospital. These two institutions contributed over $350,000. The City of New Haven was the other major financier with over 1.5 million in funds committed to this project.

Creating decent safe affordable family housing was another objective of The Hill Housing Rehabilitation Project. There were many families in New Haven who could not afford to purchase their own homes nor had access to decent rental housing. Our project provided 65 new units of housing to low-income families. We included Social Service and Job Training referrals as our mission is to empower area residents. These services included Employment Placement and Housing Counseling, which included minor house repairs. The Project is fully rented today and continues to provide decent safe affordable rental housing to the Hill.
